Portfolio (Unavailable)

Past sculptures that have been sold, gifted, or were simply too cool to part with. Currently available casts are listed on the Portfolio page.

A

My first commercially available cast. I was curious to see how a large base would work, so I used a steel springform pan to add a foundation. It will stand on its own indoors or out.

B

This shallow mound was built on top of a large sheet of limestone several inches below the surface. Hold the sculpture so that the rock is horizontal and closest to the ground. You can see the tunnel which lead into the nest at the top.

4.7 pounds, 9 by 10 by 9 inches
Sold ($120)

C

This was a very large mound (3’ by 18” high) that turned into several smaller sculptures due to the depth of the nest. I ran out of aluminum long before running out of hill. This was the largest piece to come out of that nest. “D”, (also on display at Solstice) was from the same pour.

Sold ($220)

D

This was a very large mound (3’ by 18” high) that turned into several smaller sculptures due to the depth of the nest. I ran out of aluminum long before running out of hill. This was a smaller piece that came out of that nest. “C”, (also on display at Solstice) was from the same pour.

3.1 pounds, 10 by 8 by 5 inches
Sold ($120)

E

This piece is intended to be displayed outdoors. It swivels on the sandstone base for best presentation. The cast is from a medium sized mound, and is a good example of “typical” nest building featuring several central columns with horizontal rooms spaced along them. See the Fire ant biology page for more information.

3.7 pounds, 11.5 by 8 by 5.5 inches
Sold ($180)

F

This piece may be displayed indoors or outdoors and mounts on a stone base. The cast is from a medium sized mound, and is surprisingly heavy due to the density of the nest and the inclusion of several stones.

5.6 pounds, 10 by 9 by 6 inches
Sold ($190)

G

Very dense nest featuring a large stone inclusion. This spring 2020 cast is notable for the closely stacked horizontal ‘levels’ connected by vertical shafts.

9.4 pounds, 9 by 10 by 8 inches
Sold ($280)

H

The wandering root that allows this to stand in various poses was too appealing to sell.

I

Packed with rocks and roots, this spring 2020 cast shows how the ants work their nests into rocky layers and build around obstructions. The rough aluminum texture is due to sandy soil.

13.6 pounds, 15 by 11 by 9 inches
Sold ($360)

J

A moderately dense 2020 cast with open areas exposing the core of the nest. Features strong vertical structures with lots of small branches.

7.7 pounds, 10.5 by 7.5 by 10 inches
Sold ($220)

K

This smaller piece features a root section and several stones. It may be displayed indoors or out, though the untreated wood will need a protective coat if it is in a damp environment.

Thor’s Hammer

The second nest I cast. When I first started to dig it up, I thought I’d poured around a water line. Nope, just a big thick root. The resulting hammer could have no other name, and is a reminder to not pour near the pump house.

LED

Another early one, this has been displayed in our entryway for several years. An LED wire has been strung through for the holiday season.

Wee Beastie 1

A mix of 90% copper 10% aluminum produced golden aluminum bronze. This small mound section was cast in the fall of 2021. While the full nest failed to cast, the small portion that did cast was perfect as a small gift. Cheers!
